OKC Certified Lions Defeat Soles de Sonora in OG&E Coliseum Opening Match
OKLAHOMA CITY — Our OKC Certified Lions secured a hard-fought 8–4 victory over Soles de Sonora this past Saturday, marking the first Major Arena Soccer League 2 game held at the new OG&E Coliseum. The MASL 2 matchup served as a significant win for the franchise as the Lions faced a veteran Sonora roster.
Soles de Sonora entered the match with a roster of experienced MASL players, including prominent figures such as Franck Tayou and Cristhian Segura. Despite the quality of the visiting side, the Lions established a consistent lead throughout the game, led by an offensive standout performance from Fernando Penalver, who recorded a hat trick to pace the scoring effort.
By the early stages of the fourth quarter, the Lions held a 7–2 advantage. While Sonora attempted a late-game comeback, the Lions maintained their defensive structure to finish the match with an 8–4 final score. The victory is considered a notable result given the depth and talent level of the Sonora squad.
Following the primary match, the OKC Certified Lions MASL 3 team competed against Austin’s The Bold Dream FC. The Lions’ secondary squad earned a convincing 14–4 victory, capping off a successful night for the organization across both levels of competition.
The wins provide positive momentum as the Lions continue their season. Defeating a high-caliber opponent like Soles de Sonora establishes a baseline for the team's performance at its new home venue.
The Lions return to the OG&E Coliseum this Saturday, the 27th, for another highly anticipated doubleheader. The action begins at 4:00 PM CT as the Lions take on Texas Spurs in a MASL 2 showdown. Following that match, the MASL 3 squad will face off against the RGV Barracudas at 6:30 PM CT.
